영국의 국립 미술관 National Gallery 앞에 조형물이 있었다. 무슨 풀로 만든 벽 같았다.
“진짜 같다…”라고 중얼거리며 난 그것을 만져본다. 맙소사, 진짜 풀이었다.
알고보니 제너럴 일렉트릭이 “미술을 생생하게”라는 슬로건으로 만든 조형물이었다.
이게 제너럴 일렉트릭과 무슨 상관이 있는 지는 모르겠지만, 신기하기도 하고, 또  이렇게 보니 정말 예술같기도 하다.

There was a mural right in front of National Gallery in London. It looked like some kind of a wall made out of grass.
“Looks real…” I murmured, touching the wall. Then I realized. This was real grass.
It was made by General Electrics, with the slogan, “Bring art to real life as never before.”
I don’t know how does this have to do with General Electrics, but it was refreshing… and in some ways, a work of art.

이 사진을 찍을 당시에는 몰랐는데, 이제 보면 왼쪽 하늘이 심상치 않음을 볼 수 있다.
이는 런던의 변화무쌍한 날씨를 잘 보여주는 샷이다.
한 번은 타워 브릿지를 갔는데, 들어갔을 때는 맑았다가 안에 들어가니 폭우가 쏟아지고, 다시 나오니 화창해진 일이 있었다.
이 일은 내가 런던의 날씨를 설명할 때 자주 써먹는 이야기다.
그만큼 런던의 날씨는 예측이 힘들고, 그래서 런던 사람들은 우산이나 우비는 기본으로 챙긴다고 하더라.

I did not know when I took this picture, but if you see closely to the left, the sky is dark, with probable chance of a downpour.
This shot actually represents the unpredictability of London’s weather quite well.
When my family once visited Tower Bridge, the weather was clear when we went in, a sudden downpour when we were inside, and became clear again when we got out.
I use this instance a lot to explain the unpredictability of London’s weather.
Thanks to this, I’ve heard Londoners carry either an umbrella or a raincoat with them the whole time.
