객관적으로 까고 보면, 스톤헨지는 정말 런던에서 기차타고 1시간, 다시 버스타고 30분씩이나 가서 볼 거는 아니다.
사실 정작 영국에 가서도 갈까말까 하다가 영국 언제 다시 오겠냐며 에딘버러에서 런던으로 가는날에 아빠가 기차표를 끊었다. 그것도 다음날 표를.
(그리고 런던에 사는 내 친구 란스는 제대하고 또 오라 했지)
남들이 본다면, 스톤헨지는 그냥 돌무더기다. 고대의 사람들이 가져다놓은 돌무더기.
게다가 주변에 있는 거라곤 기념품숍 하나와 이동식 화장실, 그리고 이들을 갈라놓는 왕복 2차로 도로뿐이다.
(영국은 은근히 국도급 도로도 왕복 2차로다.)
하지만 스톤헨지를 보면서, 생각을 하게 만든다. ‘도대체 누가, 왜 만들었을까?’
이는 많은 고고학자들이 달라붙었지만, 아직도 확실히 풀리지 않은 의문이다.
그걸 생각해보면, 선사 시대 인류의 신비로운 정신세계를 엿볼 수 있는 유적이 아닐까 한다.
Let’s be honest: If it wasn’t for me, who was interested in this place since I was a kid, Stone Henge does not worth an hour ride from London, then another half an hour of bus.
Even we pondered whether to go or not until the day before.
To some people, Stone Henge is just a pile of rocks. Just a pile of rocks that somehow prehistoric people are involved.
Making the impressions even worse, there are only a gift shop, some portable toilets, and a two-way road with just two lanes.
But, looking at it, makes me think: ‘Who made it, and why?’
A lot of archaeologists tried to solve the exact same questions, but still, there is no definitive answer.
I guess it’s a prehistoric site where we can take a look into prehistoric people’s interesting view of the world.
