In Korea, there is a big tech show named World IT Show 2010 (WIS in short) is going on. It’s something like CES, but much smaller, but still there are a lot of things to watch. But today, as I was covering WIS, I decided to focus on various smartphones. You see, after Apple’s iPhone finally came to Korea last November, the whole revolution in Korean smartphone market started. Unlike feature phone market, which was dominated by Korean companies like Samsung and LG, smartphone market is a mess, with Apple as the biggest name, and Korean companies and foreign companies such as HTC, Motorola, and RIM are fighting. I got to see almost all of their product offerings on the WIS, and I’d like to give you some verdicts on them. So… here we go!
어제부터 코엑스에서 월드 IT 쇼 2010, 즉 WIS가 열리고 있다. 미국 라스베가스에서 열리는 CES보다 규모가 훨씬 작지만, 여전히, 많은 것들을 볼 수가 있다. 3D TV도 있고 말이다. 하지만, 난 나의 초미의 관심사인 스마트폰들을 집중취재하기로 했다. 작년에 아이폰이 출시된 이후로, 발전이 미미했던 한국 스마트폰 시장의 일대 변동이 시작됐다. 삼성이나 LG같은 국내기업이 완전히 점령한 피쳐폰 시장과 달리, 스마트폰 시장은 애플을 선두로, 국내기업과 HTC, 모토로라, RIM 등이 피튀기며 싸움을 벌이는 중이다. WIS에는 KT, SKT, LG, 삼성 등이 모두 자사가 만들거나 서비스하는 스마트폰들을 대거 전시하였고, 난 (거의) 모두를 만져보았다. 함 볼까나?

1) HTC Desire / HTC 디자이어

Desire is hailed as one of the best Android phones out there, and after demoing it, I now see why. HTC’s Sense was easily the best UI implementation of all the Android devices that I’ve tested (even including the native Android UI). Along with Desire’s fast Snapdragon processor comes HTC’s optimization with Android on Sense, and Desire is very fast all across the board. Accuracy of the touch screen might not on par with the iPhone, but its giant screen and vivid color of the AMOLED display compensates for it. Also, its sleek profile, matte finish, and a little chin on the bottom helps a lot with the grip. I also found optical trackball to be very useful, especially when editing texts, since Android does not have iPhone-like fine text movements. Although Sense in Android 2.1 supports Flash Lite 4, due to the slow internet, I was not able to test it. In conclusion, Desire is the textbook of Android smartphones.
디자이어는 현재 출시된 안드로이드폰중 최고로 평가받고 있고, 실제로 사용해보니, 그 이유를 알겠다. HTC의 센스는 내가 테스트해본 안드로이드 UI(심지어 구글의 기본 스킨을 포함하더라도)중 가히 최고였다. 디자이어 자체의 스냅드래곤 프로세서 외에도, HTC가 센스를 이용해 해낸 안드로이드 최적화로 인해, 반응속도는 정말 빨랐다. 터치 스크린의 정확도는 아이폰보다 떨어질 수는 있지만, 거대한 크기와 화사한 색감의 AMOLED 화면은 아이폰에 비해 확실히 앞선다. 또한, 잘 빠진 몸체와 무광택 표면, 그리고 아래의 작은 턱은 그립에도 많은 도움을 준다. 또한, 아래에 달린 광학식 트랙볼은 텍스트 편집 등에서 상당한 사용성을 보엿다. (안드로이드 자체에 아이폰처럼 돋보기형 텍스트 칸 이동이 없다.) 센스 UI가 플래시 라이트 4를 지원하긴 하나, 전시회에서의 인터넷이 너무 느려 테스트해보진 못했다. 하지만 결론적으로, 디자이어는 안드로이드 스마트폰들의 교과서라 불리우기에 충분하다.

I think this model is after people who didn’t like the edged design of MOTOROI (which I think it’s much better), and made everything more rounded. It doesn’t have that much difference from MOTOROI in terms of other features except design. It uses almost exactly same OS as its edgy counterpart, and hardware seems almost identical. Although it is not terrible, the software response is still sluggish compared to Desire, and UI still looks a bit weird. I would rather wait for Korean version of Milestone (or Droid).
이 모델은 꼭 모토로이의 각진 디자인을 싫어하셨던 분들을 위해 만든 곡선 버전인 거 같다. 디자인 빼고는 모토로이와 다른 점이 하나도 없기 때문이다. 각진 녀석과 똑같은 롬을 쓰는 듯하고, 하드웨어도 거의 똑같아보인다. 아주 나쁜 것도 아니지만, 소프트웨어 자체는 아직도 디자이어와 비교하면 많이 느리고, UI도 이상해보인다. 차라리 곧 출시예정이라하는 마일스톤(드로이드)의 한국 버전을 기대하는 게 낫겠다.
3) Samsung Galaxy A / 삼성 갤럭시 A

Galaxy A is not the first Android phone that Samsung has made, but it is certainly the latest effort at it. It is the first Samsung Android device to be launched on Korean market, and I was a bit underwhelmed by the effort. The interface seems way too similar to iPhone (I guess it was inevitable given the fact that TouchWiz is born to catch up to iPhone), but it seems they messed up pretty badly with the experience of the phone. The whole UI does not just feel right. Also, thanks to rather slow processor, the experience somehow felt slow. I think Galaxy S will eventually solve the slow interface issue, but the UI still needs a revamp to emphasize Samsung’s creativity.
갤럭시 A는 삼성이 처음으로 만든 안드로이드폰은 아니다. 한국에서 처음으로 출시된 삼성 안드로이드폰이지만, 나는 큰 감명을 받지는 못했다. UI 자체는 아이폰을 베낀 것이 너무 보이고 (뭐, 터치위즈가 원래 그런 기반으로 시작된 것이니 그럴만도 하다), 거기에 UX는 훨씬 뒤쳐진다. 전체적 인터페이스가 그냥 맞아떨어지지가 않는다. 게다가 이미 거대한 논란이 일어났던 느린 프로세서 덕에, 전체적으로 응답 속도도 디자이어 등에 비교하면 답답했다. 갤럭시 S가 나오면 응답 속도 문제는 해결되겠지만, UI의 개조는 여전히 필요하다 본다.
4) LG Optimus Q / LG 옵티머스 Q

LG’s Optimus Q is something I was quite impressed with. Let alone the giving user the choice of selecting either the stock Google-supplied skin or LG’s customized skin (which was much better than the Galaxy A’s implementation, I might add), it was the only QWERTY slider that I encountered with, and the mechanism was very solid. Also, the keyboard was very good, with very tactile feedback. It is definitely one of the best keyboards on a cellphone. Software seemed little sluggish, but given the fact that the demo unit had a test version of 2.1 ROM on it, it is understandable. On some aspects, I think it beats Motorola’s own Droid.
LG의 옵티머스 Q는 상당히 강한 인상을 심어줬다. 구글의 기본 스킨과 LG가 만든 스킨(갤럭시 A의 그것보다 훨씬 나았다)을 선택할 수 있게 했을 뿐만아니라, 이 전시회에서 만든 폰중 유일한 쿼티 슬라이더였다. 사실 쿼티 슬라이더는 국내에선 상당히 생소한 타입이지만, 하드웨어 자체는 상당히 견고해보였다. 실제로, 슬라이딩 매커니즘은 많이 향상된 거라는 말을 들었다. 또한, 또각또각 반응이 바로 오는 키보드 또한 괜찮았다. 핸드폰용 키보드 중에서는 확연히 최고였다. 소프트웨어 자체는 살짝 버벅이는 감이 없지않아 있었으나, 아직 2.1 테스트롬을 돌리고 있던 시연 기기(둘째날부터 1.6을 돌리는 기기들로 교체되었다)임을 감안했을 때, 이정도면 봐줄만 하다. 어떤 면에서는, 모토로라의 드로이드보다 훨씬 낫다. (특히, 키보드)
5) LG Optimus Z / LG 옵티머스 Z

Optimus Z is basically Optimus Q in slimmer package, without QWERTY keyboard. Unlike Optimus Q, it comes with Android 2.1 pre-loaded, and others in software or hardware-wise, it’s pretty much the same. I should say, the hardware design looks better than Galaxy A, and looks much more elegant.
옵티머스 Z에 대해서는 그닥 많은 얘기를 할 필요가 없는 것이, 그냥 옵티머스 Q에서 쿼티 자판을 뺀 모습이기 때문이다. 또한 Q와는 달리 2.1을 기본으로 탑재한다. (Q에 1.6을 달은 이유는 LGT와의 망 연동 문제인 것으로 알려져있다.) 그 외에는 내부 사양 면에서는 완전히 똑같다. 하지만, 디자인은 갤럭시 A보다 확실히 더 고급스러워 보인다. 마음에 많이 드는 폰이다.
6) Samsung Wave / 삼성 웨이브

Samsung’s Wave was something that I wasn’t expecting to be good. But I gotta say, it has potentials. Samsung’s Bada OS was very responsive on Wave, and UI seemed more complete than TouchWiz Android skin on Galaxy A (and possibly S). I think Samsung just abruptly made the Android skin, then fiddled around with it, then put it on Bada. It feels more natural. Also, the device was very compact (sometimes, not having a gazillion-size screen helps), and its Super AMOLED display was one of the best displays I’ve ever seen. Although not enough for a full-fledged smartphone, I think Wave is much more capable than KIN on tackling that niche market between feature phones and smartphones.
삼성의 웨이브는 사실 그닥 기대를 많이 하지 않았다. 삼성이 바다 OS를 어떻게 발전시키려는 지에 대한 비전이 보이지 않았기 때문이다. 하지만 이제 마이크로소프트의 즐폰 사건와 직접 시연 이후, 잠재력이 크다고 본다. 삼성의 바다 OS는 웨이브에서 정말 쾌적했고(초기에 버벅인다는 문제는 최적화를 통해 다 고친 모양이다), UI는 갤럭시 A (그리고 아마도 S의) 안드로이드 터치위즈 스킨보다 훨씬 더 완성되어 보였다. 내 생각엔 삼성이 안드로이드 스킨을 먼제 급하게 만들고, 좀 개조해서 바다 OS를 만든 듯하다. 모든게 훨씬 더 자연스럽달까? 그리고 하드웨어적으로도, 기기 자체는 손에 딱 맞는 크기였고 (어떨 때는 거대한 스크린을 가지는 게 도움이 되진 않는다는 거…) 그리고 슈퍼 AMOLED 화면은 내가 최근에 본 화면들 중 최고였다. 완전한 스마트폰이 되진 못하지만, 내 생각엔 피쳐폰과 스마트폰을 잇는 그 틈새시장에는 웨이브가 그 즐폰보다 훨 낫다고 본다.
